Book presentation “Yak Girl” by Dorje Dolma and film screening “The Only Son” about her brother Pema on 1.11.2018 in Zurich

Born in Dolpo, a remote region of northern Nepal, Dorje Dolma is the eldest of 11 children. The living conditions at about 4000 m above sea level are tough: Five of Dorje’s siblings die. Also, Dorje’s life is in danger. She suffers from scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. Hoping for help, the parents with Dorje and two of her siblings set off on a dangerous journey for a month through the rough terrain to Kathmandu. There they meet ROKPA Co-Founder Lea Wyler. It is the beginning of a new life that would eventually take Dorje to the US. She has recorded her story in the book “Yak Girl”, which she introduces to us.

After the presentation, we will show the documentary „The Only Son“ by director Simonka de Jong in the presence of its main character – Pema, Dorje’s brother. Pema, also born in Dolpo but raised in the ROKPA Children’s Home in Kathmandu, is caught between two worlds: as the only son of the family, the parents demanded that according to tradition he cultivate their land and marry a woman from the village. But Pema, who lives and works in the Netherlands today, wants to go his own way. Embark on a journey with Pema and learn more about this family’s extraordinary relationship with ROKPA.
